If you were to read my other reviews (324 of them as of the time I penned this one) you will see that I have never, ever reviewed any household cleaning supplies or devices. There is a reason for this, and the fact that I am male, a lawyer and pushing sixty ought to give you some pretty strong clues. Now how I came to review this nice Kenmore is a long story and involves my mother-in-law. For a significant birthday milestone, I am not allowed to say which one, my mother-in-law took my wife on a long cruise and tour of Italy. This left me at home with two responsibilities-feed the cats and don't mess up the house. The former was comparatively easy; the second a bit more daunting. So I did what any red-blooded American husband would do-I secretly engaged a cleaning lady. My plan was upon her return she would see how nice and clean everything was and would trust me if she should ever again leave for an extended period during football season.

Like all plans of this kind, my plot was instantly uncovered for two basic reasons. The first was that the house was substantially cleaner than I am capable of making it. The second reason involved her being greeted by said cleaning lady when she walked in the door. My wife however is no fool and she told the cleaning lady to return regularly. In spite of the fact that our house has a central vac, the cleaning lady told my wife she preferred a Kenmore canister vacuum (I not making this up) and to keep her happy we bought her a really good one.

The story cannot end there however. You can't write a review about how easy it is to buy a vacuum cleaner. Imagine then my surprise when I was told to assemble it from the box and vacuum up the dead Christmas tree needles. Having done so I am now more than qualified to write a review. So here goes.

Assembly:

The vacuum comes in a box with even the bag inserted. All one has to do is take it out, plug in the hose and the power head (or other attachment), turn it on, and get to vacuuming.


Vacuuming:

Tugging around this canister is no more difficult than lugging a thirty foot central vac hose (okay so I have vacuumed before). The 360 degree swivel keeps the hose from kinking, so I was not constantly twisting the wand. The wand itself is made from aluminum and telescopes out about 3 feet. The power head can be used on bare floors or carpet and the switch conveniently goes from off to floor to carpet and is located on the handle grip. The floor setting will not work properly if the separate pile height setting on the power head is not set to XLO which is Sears-speak for extra low. There is a second power head gizmo for vacuuming stairs and if I am ever stupid enough again to buy another house with stairs I will amend my review to tell you how it does. Additionally there are many non-powered attachments for dusting (what's that?) and crevices.

Storage:

There is a place for all the tools including the power head. The storage of the power head required a quick trip to the owners manual for instructions. That does not diminish the utility of on-board storage for all the gizmos. It is a good idea and well executed.


Suggestions for improvements:

Like most men, I cannot see dirt. Many times my wife will point out areas where I was supposed to have vacuumed as being ignored. So a result of this, one obvious suggestion would be a GPS so I could tell if I have ever been over a particular patch of floor. A second suggestion would be a video monitor like in those new luxury cars that shows thats behind you. Miele Earth Canister Vacuum Cleaner S5481

This is a great vacuum. I thought long and hard about spending $1,000 on a vacuum. It was NOT an easy decision.
5 Stars for the vacuum itself but looses a star due to the attachments.

PROS:
The vacuum itself is great. Powerful suction, low noise (much lower than any other vacuum I've ever heard) which makes it less annoying to vacuum, the auto-power feature works well (remember, it's the amount of air flow that counts, unless your trying to pick up a bowling ball) and it's less strain on the motor, I definitely noticed the REAL HEPA filtering on this vacuum, no smell an no dust blowing around.

CONS:
The ergonomic handle is OK when using the floor attachments but makes dusting shelves and other items difficult when using the attachments. It is also bulking making it difficult to get under and around items. Their solution is to purchase the car cleaning kit or the micro kit at $150 - 175. For $1,000 it should have the option to remove the ergonomic handle. This would have been helpful.

Overall I'm happy with the purchase because I have bad dust allergies and no other vacuum has had real HEPA filtering. I decided my health was worth the expense.

Miele S2180 Titan Canister Vacuum - Chili Red Top Quality

I have owned my share of vacuums over the years. And like strollers, I kept trying to find the "one" that would be all I needed. I think I finally found it! About a month ago, I decided to put my Eureka Boss out to pasture and begin the search for a new vacuum. My FIL had a new Dyson vacuum that he seemed to like, so I started my research there. Boy, am I glad other reviewers recommended in their reviews to check out the Miele vacuums instead!

I live in a four story Colonial (basement is "unfinished", but we have rugs down where the washing machine is) and our walk-up attic was just refinished with wall-to-wall carpeting. On the other two "main" floors, it's mostly hardwood/tile and area rugs. So, we have many different floor surfaces requiring different maintenance needs! The more I researched Miele, the more I knew a canister vacuum was for me. I couldn't fathom trying to carry a heavy upright up and down all the different levels in my house. I found a local appliance store that sold Mieles and went to look at them myself. We bought one soon after through Amazon.

Here's what I like most about the Miele:
1. The retractable cord. It's a pet-peeve of mine that more appliances don't have this feature! And although the cord isn't super long, it's enough to do a room (at least in my house) and then unplug it to do another room.
2. The quietness. I just had a second baby and was worried about how I was going to keep the house clean with coordinating TWO nap and sleep schedules. The Titan (and I'm sure most other Mieles) resolve this issue by making it very quiet to use. I even used it in the room with my sleeping newborn and it didn't wake him!
3. The lightness. I can easily move this vacuum up and down the stairs with one hand. Don't know exactly what it weighs, but it's pretty light.
4. The different brushes and "heads" that attach to the hose. My Eureka had some of them, but they were such a pain to use. Switching out the brushes on the Titan is easy and quick. I never thought about vacuuming the top of the trim with my Eureka, but do all the time now with the Titan.
5. The powerbrush. This Miele comes with a powerbrush, which was essential for our house, because we have carpet, and some of it "thick pile". This powerbrush makes it easy to use on carpet and then by just pushing a switch on the handle, you can turn off the power (but not the suction) to the powerbrush and continue to vacuum the hardwood or tile floor. It's not as great as the hardfloor brush (which is also included), but it definitely works better to suck up dust and hairballs better than my Eureka ever did on hardfloor.
6. The filters. This model came with a HEPA filter, but we haven't even used it and the air quality (at least while vacuuming) seemed better! We don't have allergies (at least not indoor ones) though so I'm probably not the best person to believe.
7. The suction. It has six different levels of suction and even at the lowest suction end, it still managed to suck up more dirt than my Eureka ever could! (there's a piece of molding missing around a part on our floor and dirt falls in there like it's the grand canyon....the Titan removed it all, on the LOWEST suction setting!). The most amazing thing is that even with the brush attachments, it doesn't kick the dirt backwards, to be scattered across the floor again. It actually picks up the dirt on hard floor surfaces!

Things that could improve:
1. I wish there were a "handle" on the top of the unit, when it's on its three caster wheels. It would be nice to just pick it up as is and move it over a really high threshold or all the baby-gates we have in our house, without putting it on its "feet" first.
2. A place to store the "parquet floorbrush" on the vacuum itself. It's the only adapter/brush that doesn't have a "home" on the Titan.
3. Might also be nice to "retract" the hose that attaches the canister with the brush attachments, for storage. There seems to be a lot of hose to figure out how to wind around the handle before putting it away. Maybe they could figure out how to make the hose shorter sometimes and longer when you need it.

Overall, I'm EXTREMELY satisfied with this vacuum. And it's even gotten my husband (who NEVER vacuums) to vacuum once in a while! I'd definitely recommend this to my friends and family.Get more detail about Miele S2180 Titan Canister Vacuum - Chili Red.

We thought long and hard before spending this much money for a vacuum. But, the rave reviews on MANY websites finally convinced us to buy the Miele S5281 Pisces vacuum. We had gone through several other vacuums, costing $300-$400 each, all of which met with a seemingly early demise. We are definitely not hard on vacuums and probably don't run them often enough!

The Miele vacuum is everything we thought it would be and more. It is about 1/2 the weight of our old vacuum and the design of the wheels make it VERY easy to pull around. The parquet twister floor brush is a delight to use and allows access to many small areas we were unable to reach with our old vacuum. I've had this vac for a year and it's been great except like some of the others, the switch broke and I had to unplug it to turn it off. Unplug the vac and take out the screws that hold the handle together. It won't come apart completely but enough for the plastic piece that is used to turn it on and off to come off, it has the printed words 'carpet', 'floor', 'off'. The piece is poorly designed and therefore fails easily. Underneath is the real switch with a square black slider button. I moved the switch back and forth to make sure it wasn't stuck. I plugged in the vac and it turned off and on and it worked perfectly. I purchased this vacuum cleaner in 2008. I moved into a new home.

Other vacuum cleaners were messy to empty, and just didn't do the job.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this vacuum cleaner. It came with the "Twister" Parquet Floor Brush (for hardwoods, and tile, and a Power head for carpeting. It is lightweight, and very quiet even turned up to max.

The Vacuum NEVER EVER EVER loses suction. It has a variable setting on the handle to control the amount of suction and sound. For hardwoods and tile, I turn it all the way up. I use this for my main living area (hardwoods) and in my bathroom with the twister floor brush. It makes cleanups a breeze. I have two cats, and keeping a dust free clean house used to be a chore.

The Powerbrush for carpets is so wonderful, it detaches, and has a headlight. It cleans the carpet quickly and never misses anything.

I dust my house with this vacuum cleaner as well, it has a hidden compartment with all the attachments you will need.
A general brush for dusting, window sills, and other things.

An upholstery brush for couches, and furniture. Speaking of brushes, The floor brush and general brush are maid from natural animal hair, and can be hand washed with some dish soap and let air dry.

Last but not least it comes with a skinny attachment to get in the nooks and crannies of the couch, pure bliss.

You can tell this machine was built right. Germans are well known for automobiles, and well Miele is no exception.
People often can't justify the $1,100.00 price tag for a vacuum cleaner, and I'm here to tell you, it's money well spent.
You will only need to buy a new vacuum every 15 years if you own a Miele.

How often can you say you enjoy vacuuming? My partner and I fight over who can clean!

Buying a new Vacuum? Buy a Miele PERIOD. It will give you years of great cleaning, and looks wonderful too.

I have a lot of hardwood and tile floors and stairs. I also have some deep pile carpet and upholstery and a beloved kitty cat.

No seat in the house is too good for him to shed upon. As much as I love him, I don't like what he leaves behind. I had a Panasonic upright commercial vac for 15+ years that served me well and although still functions it is not right right for my new floor coverings, nor does it do a good job of removing the cat hair.

I am very pleased with this vacuum. I believe another reviewer wrote it could suck the chrome off a hitch -- that's an accurate assessment. It is powerful but has 2 settings, high and low so if you want to vacuum your hitch and leave the chrome intact you can.

Things that prevent me from giving it 5 stars:

Cord storage. My Panasonic had a manual wrap too but this machine has no way to keep the cord from raveling off when moving it. I got a velcro strap to remedy that.

No on board tool storage. I have to store the extra tools (crevice device, upholstery brush, etc) in a bag hanging in the garage where I keep the vacuum. A Kenmore canister I had had a lift top with storage for these.

There is no way these things would stop me from buying this vacuum again.

Someone commented that positive reviews for this vac were from Metropolitan employees. I don't know about that but I don't work for them and don't know anyone who does.

The S4 Carina is not nearly as good as my original (S2481) - the cord is at least a foot shorter (a real nuisance); the suction is vague and just skims the carpet; the new head is fatter and does not go under my furniture and to switch settings, the tab is too stiff for my toe, so I must bend down to switch from floor to rug (I have area rugs so this is no good) - fortunately, I simply attached my original head (the new one is relegated to the back of the closet) - which slides under furniture and can be "adjusted by toe". (though the suction is of course, poor). Maneuverability is awkward.
I resent that I spent so much money because I trusted this brand. If your vacuuming needs are limited to a small floor-only area, and light-weight is important to you, then if the price is right, this vacuum is fine. I used to use the rug beater on the carpet in one room only as I have oriental rugs elsewhere. I found the Miele suction to be so good that a beater was not needed. The Miele floor/carpet combo head works well with the oriental rugs and the bare wood floor.

1) carpet/ floor nozzle doesn't stay in "brush setting" for hardwood floor
2) nozzle falls off
3) Connecting hose falls off the metal wand all the time and hits your toes/foot - ouch!!
4) cheap plastic hose twists and kinks off, resulting in loss of suction
5) the plastic body housing the vac mechanism constantly goes belly up everytime you manouvre it
6) cord got tangled inside housing after 8 months, I had to take the orange cover apart to fix it (harder than it sounds)
7) useless accessory brush - too small a footprint to do anything useful with it

My husband and I have been shopping for a good vacuum because we have 2500 square feet of tile, wood and three low pile area rugs along with a 9 yr old son, two dogs and live in a sandy, woody area. All of our family suffers from allergies and our son suffers with asthma so I was pleased about the filtration system that Miele offers.

I took my "dirty" area rug to my local Miele dealer which had about two weeks of dirt along with dog hair since our Hoover died. We put the Miele Delphi to the test and it cleaned the rug beautifully!!! I was instantly sold and brought the new Miele home. I would've ordered online but I really needed to try it out in the store because of my dog's hair.

I have spent 2 hours vacuuming everything I can possibly vacuum!!! The floors, ottoman, baseboards, lamp shades and I'm loving it. It is hard to believe that someone can get so excited about a vacuum. I gave the Delphi a 4 star rating only because I found it maneuvered a bit awkwardly over the power cord at times. I think it would be great if they could design the powerhead to "lock" upright when you want to take a break rather than attaching it to the canister to "park" it. Despite these two items I've mentioned, I am still extremely happy with my purchase.

I know I made the right decision on buying the Miele and look forward to years and years of cleaning. My car is next.....after I recover from my marathon today!!!

I've had a Dyson for the past 5 years. After owning my Miele for a week I've been shocked about how much dirt the Dyson had been leaving behind. My hardwood floors and area rugs have never looked cleaner... and that's saying something as I'm a clean freak with 3 kids and I vacuum everyday. The powerbrush feature is a must. Without it it's not worth having. It made one of my old rugs look brand new and the brush head itself works great on hardwood floors (with the powerbrush function turned to off for floors). The other attachments are also great for cleaning curtains, ceilings, baseboards, etc. If your home is mostly hardwood floors and you've owned an upright previously you'll wish you'd purchased a canister vacuum long ago.

This vacuum didn't get 5 stars from me because of the cord length. It boasts and extra long cord which makes me wonder what on earth the regular cord must be like. I had to unplug and replug my Dyson 2-3 times to clean the downstairs floor of my house. I have to unplug and replug the Miele 7-8 times! I find this so irritating that I took off a star, and almost took of 2 stars.

I honestly don't know if it is worth $600 or the heart attack my husband had when he opened up my Amex bill. Not having had a chance to compare it to a less expensive machine I can't be sure.
