Too bad this is so poorly made with cheapo plastic parts and apparently zero quality control, 'cause it's a great machine with lots of innovative features when it's working. But mine has broken three times in 15 months with light use. Replaced the first time (continuously retracting cord + broken telescoping wand) under warranty. Took about a month for the new machine to develop the cord retraction problem. Kind of annoying to tie a knot in the electrical cord to be able to use a new, $500 vacuum cleaner. Then a plastic part snapped that held the wand to the body snapped. Again, repaired under warranty (but the one facility is inconvenient and you'll be w/out a vac for a couple of weeks). Now that it's not longer under warranty, the power floor tool for carpets no longer works, there is no electrical connection happening between the wand and the attachment. I really expected better, considering it's Sears' top of the line vacuum. Says a lot about the quality of their appliances to me. Last Kenmore I'll ever purchase. I'm torn. I have a Miele Orion and I like it very well so far, but I have had problems with the radio frequency controls on the handle. In my case, the battery would drain every two weeks or so. I took it back to the shop and they were able to swap out the part for a new one under warranty.
The new handle part has a modified design. Formerly, the buttons for power and suction stood just a little bit proud of the handle, and now, on the new part, there is a molded ridge around the buttons. I suspect that the original design allowed the buttons to get pressed inadvertently while the vac stood in a crowded closet, which caused the battery to drain.
I don't know if Miele made other, internal changes to the design, but the new part is working well so far. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, because I like the vacuum otherwise. It might be safer to choose a different Miele S4 model because of the RF control problems, but, on the other hand, I really appreciate the convenience of the handle-mounted controls.

I should start by saying that this is my first Miele vacuum. After hours or research online (including consumer reports, internet reviews, etc.) I narrowed down my selection to a Dyson DC17 Absolute Animal or the Miele Delphi S2120. Macy's department store had the Dyson DC17 on sale with an additional 10% off, so I decided to try it out. After using the Dyson for the first time, I found that it pulled out fibers from my carpet (5-years old) after many slow passes and too big to get underneath furniture. I should add that I do not have pets or children, so my carpet is what many would consider easy to vacuum. Also, I emptied the container many times to ensure that it did not clog. The second try (same day) I discovered that not only was it continuing to pull out my carpet, but it began to lose suction. I went online again (YouTube) and found that I am not the only person who had complaints after the first couple of uses. YouTube had a good video from a repair shop titled, 'Dyson DC17 Repair & Maintenance Warnings' which helped to explain repair and cleaning. I promptly returned vacuum to Macy's and went to Bed Bath and Beyond (not all stores carry Miele, but they can order it online and waive shipping) to get the Miele. I would recommend that if you purchase a vacuum; get it from a local retailer for hassle free returns and exchanges.

As the previous reviewer wrote, the vacuum is very easy to assemble. I was surprised to learn that the dust bag and filters were already to go (no unpacking needed). It did take some getting used to after using an upright vacuum for so long. At first, it was hard to know if the vacuum was working because it was so quiet and my carpet did not really need vacuuming. I found myself checking the level dial to see what worked best on medium pile dense carpet. After using it a couple of times, I have no doubt that the vacuum has excellent suction and does not produce dust particles for those who are sensitive to dust. Overall, I have NO REGRETS with purchasing the Miele Delphi S2120.

The upright has a belt which drives the roller brush, but this canister vacuum does NOT have a roller brush or a belt so I'm confused by a previous reviewers comments. I wouldn't dream of using it on the fringed area of any rugs because the suction is extremely powerful - even when you open the tab to lower the suction. It's extremely lightweight, the attachments are well made, the wand extends a long way, the hose seems a bit flimsy, but that's my only complaint. Bags are a breeze to change and reasonbly priced. We purchased this from a local vacuum repair shop after getting our upright repaired. With a little figuring and some pics to go by were we were able to get the unit running pretty quick. Just remember there's a plastic adapter piece that must go between the main handle and the metal tube that serves as an extension and holds the accessories.

Paid extra for the moving vacuum rotating piece (brush) that picks up dirt, but worth it. Good for a small house, rugs were new and everything picked up well.

In common areas, it's not an issue, but in the bedroom... I never knew my husband could shed so much. His hair is all over the floor, and while there is a brush strip on the front edge of the vaccuum, this fills with hair and lint so quickly, it's useless in two minutes. Unless, of course, you pick out the hair and lint by hand. And then you can vacuum for another two minutes.

The bare floor performance is excellent on the wood and tile (in my mother's house) and the linoleum (in my apartment) and while it does keep my wall-to-wall carpet cheerio, goldfish cracker, and cookie crumb-free, the hair issue is really bothering us. If you have long hair that piles into dustbunnies in the corners of your room, this vacuum will flatten out the dustbunnies until they are nearly invisible as an extra layer of carpet.

This vacuum's saving grace is that it is very QUIET. VERY. QUIET. If you want to vacuum while people are sleeping - this is the vacuum for you. If you are a fairly neat person with only everyday adult wear and tear to deal with - this is the vacuum for you. It's tiny and the bags are easy to find online. They even come with a sticker so that you can cover up the hole when you are throwing the bag away. It's not a bad vacuum at all, I just wish it came with a beater brush attachment. Needed a new vacuum and lots of great reviews for this one. My experience just didn't seam quite as good. We got the first unit home and there were parts missing. You have to put the handle and Cord storage pieces on your self. The item didn't have any screws to do this so I took that one back for a new one. The new one did come with the screws but the brush would only work for about 30 seconds then stop. If you waited a few minutes, it would start working again. When it did work, it worked like a charm but I can't stop every 30 seconds to wait 2 minutes... I don't know if it overheated or was faulty but it would work and then, out of no where, stop. So, third time's a charm, I went back and got one more. The last one, the brush switch wouldn't turn off the brush. By now, I've had it. I took the last one in and just got the Dyson DC25 Animal. I've used my share of vacuums over the years, but I've never seen anything like this. I measure it at 9" across, which means you have to make a lot more passes to cover your floor than other vacuums you've probably used. It's also very lightweight, and rests fairly high on a wheel where it joins the wand, so that it tends to skitter across the carpet rather than aggravating it. This is on normal, tufted wall-to-wall carpet. You can get it to work if you apply downward pressure on the handle while vacuuming. Takes forever. I checked the dyson website, and no other motorhead seems to be available. In short, if you have hardwood, buy the "turbine" (air-powered) version of this. After using this vacuum for the first time, my house literally SMELLED different. The matted down pile on my normal carpet and my shag rugs were restored to new. They were both soft and fluffy to walk on again. It smelled like it does right after I have the carpets cleaned. This vacuum is POWERFUL. From what I gathered it seems to get everything out of the carpet. Stuff I didn't even know was there. This vacuum is also heavy, which while not a big deal for me, may be for some. I can still easily carry it up stairs. I am very happy with this vacuum!

Now for the cons, nothing is perfect and this is no exception. Yes the canister is small, and yes if you fill past the fill line it will dump all over the carpet. The first time I used it I had to empty the canister six or seven times. After that I had to empty it once or twice. Bissell can improve on this feature. Second, even with the extension, the hose is pretty short. A second extension arm would work wonders here. As for the oft disputed "pet hair easer", this is definitely a gimmicky device. It isn't necessary but I did find it useful on the stairs.

I just need to keep up with vacuuming every 2 weeks and the symptoms go away. This machine works especially well on carpets because of its carpet beater head that spins and gets the dirt trapped in the fibers. The wand can be extended for reaching a wider area without moving from the spot, and it even goes under the bed with ease. Like other reviewers mentioned, once you have the carpet function turned on, it pulls itself forward so it is a lot less effort to clean the carpets.

I clean and wash the main filter each time the canister is full, and let it dry overnight before next use. I haven't, however, cleaned the exhaust filter, which is becoming clogged and reduces the efficiency of the vacuum. The light blinks to tell you that it is having a hard time pushing air out. Both filters are cleanable and replaceable, but I haven't needed to replace my filters in 5 years.

For people dislike the noise from vacuum machines, this product is nice because it has 3 power settings and you can use the lowest setting for a lot of situations. Even at the highest setting it is quieter than many cheaper vacuums out there.

This vacuum has been through much abuse and is still working very well. You can use it to clean stairs, car seats, and even get rid of spiders and ants and bees that happen to get lost in your home. After spending so much money on different vacuums, I'd just about given up and gave into buying the Dyson (but way too expensive), so after reading the reviews I decided to try this last one. I am very disappointed with this vacuum. My family has owned Hoover's for years, including the convertible, dial-a-matic, celebrity canister, dimension 1000, and spectrum canisters, all going strong to this day...As we all know Hoover is not Hoover anymore. I purchased this to really add to my collection but also see what the Hoover products were like today in 2010. I am very disappointed. Just the feel of the vacuum is cheap. This model is quiet and has good suction, but everything else feels flimsy. The attachments are horrible...what happened to the standard 4 attachments canisters used to have, that would store on the unit? The floor brush is horrible, I actually use a kenmore canister floor brush on this model, as the one Hoover puts with this model is horrible. The controls are all on the canister...not like my Dimension 1000 where all the controls were on the hand grip, which was sized correctly. This hand grip is oversized considering it only has 1 switch for the brush roll on/off. The aluminum wand is also flimsy, I can see that busting with heavy use, not like the chrome wands Hoover had on all their past canister models. Hoover you can do better. If this was going to be my everyday vacuum, I would return, but I will keep it as a spare in my collection.

I hope Hoover comes back to Hoover one day. For now, there are better choices. Invest in quality and put your money towards a Miele or Riccar Canister Vacuum.

I use it in my service business as both a hose vac and in seconds could switch the hose around to the back side for a powerful blower to dislodge dust that a vacuum attachment would never find. With the thin attachment on the end of the hose, the blow power was just short of an air compressor.

After a spell of not being able to find a new Mighty Mite, I was pleased to see that a new model, less sleek in design, and yellow in color was available in the current 2010 market. I bought it. Today was it's test run. Vacuumed fine, plenty of suction. But when I went to try the blower I was in a panic. It has about 1/5th the blow power that my previous Mighty Mites had. Ok, my sister has a Dyson and loves it.
We bought a DC23 because we recently completed renos and wanted something that would suck up, but not spread unhealthy reno dust.
There are two ways that vacuums can inadvertently spread dust, either through an exhaust that is not well-filtered, or by the exhaust stirring up dust on the floor that we haven't had a chance to pick up yet.
Prior to purchasing the DC23, we were under the impression that this unit solved both issues. It doesn't solve either.
We thought it could be operated while carrying it in one hand and vacuuming with the other (as one might do on stairs or or when vacuuming tall curtains, etc). We were surprised that when we called Dyson, we found that it was not designed to do this, and in fact we could see that our unit leaked air (and dust) from the seal between the hose and the bin when the unit was lifted. We ended up with a visible dust trail on the unit itself.
Not good. Though we initially thought we might have a defective unit, Dyson's people told us that the unit wasn't designed to be used while carrying, despite the fact that nothing about this is said in any of the Dyson literature available with the vac or online. When the Dyson serviceperson told us this, we wondered what other hidden caveats there might be. In fact, he told us another: the Dyson may break down if you try to vacuum up even a small amount of drywall dust or talc. This luckily isn't an issue for us, and we wouldn't be surprised if other vacuums also had problems with such fine dust.
Another big downside for us is that the Dyson blew a blast of air along the floor, which doesn't help when you're trying to pick up the dust (and, as mentioned above, there's no use trying to lift the unit to avoid this problem, because this caused the seal to break and dust to leak out of the unit itself).
So, unless we would be content to drag the vacuum along our pine floors, stirring up dust that we hadn't got to yet along the way (in addition, we found it rather heavy for its size and we felt it risked scratching our floors) and unless we were content with dust spewing out of the unit itself when we lifted the unit up then we quickly realized we would be very unhappy with this thing in our house.
We have since returned it and purchased another unit made by another, smaller company that also offers a smallish, well-rated (by Consumer Reports) cannister vac with a HEPA filter that blows the exhaust upward, instead of along the floor. The company that makes our replacement doesn't seem to spend nearly as much of its efforts on advertising as Dyson -- I'm not going to mention their name because I don't want to give them free advertising, but a little bit of research should be able to turn them up.

I bought this vacuum cleaner mainly for my stairs and hardwood floors in my home. It's really lightweight and does a fantastic job. I have two cats and you can imagine the cat hair collecting everywhere. With the broom half of it would just fly around the room. The vacuum is straight suction only which is perfect for hardwood. It has more than enough suction. As a matter of fact, the woman who cleans my house had me order one for her house. She especially loved how she could sweep under the cupboard ledges in the kitchen and bathroom, something her Shark couldn't do. The hose is also quite long. I am able to go halfway up the stairs without moving the vacuum. The only carpet this vacuum sees is what is on my staircase, so I will not comment on it's ability to vacuum carpets. But it picks up cat hair like no tomorrow. I also use pine pellets for my cat litter. The big draw back is they break down into sawdust. This vacuum picks them up easily.

My mother always used Electrolux canister-type vacuums when I was young and I figured they were a reliable workhorse. WRONG!

This was an incredibly expensive ($799 New Zealand dollars) option compared to the competition but, with my false sense of security, I thought I was making a good investment. I've owned this vacuum for 18 months now (it's now outside of warranty and requires $350NZD worth of repairs) and have had nothing but problems since day one when it wouldn't switch on. Back to the store it went and I was given a replacement on the spot which I thought was great. But after two days, that unit wouldn't switch on either. Back to the store... then a two week wait for repairs. A few months later same issue, and it happen two other times since then.

Aside from that, there have been many issues with the cheap plastic parts on the wand and the powered head. I've had three replacement wands (which either snap or the clip connectors fail) and two power heads (the plastic parts of which also snap). I've also had issues disconnecting All these problems on a vacuum I use only once a week in a 140-square-metre home with 50/50 carpet/hard-wood floors.

I WILL NEVER BUY ELECTROLUX AGAIN! And I warn any other consumers considering this brand to look elsewhere.
