I was in the market recently to replace my aging Bissell bagless upright, which was a mediocre product even when brand new. I did a bit of research and purchased a Dyson DC17 Animal - what I thought was a top of the line vacuum. I used the Dyson for 2 days before returning to Amazon - I was very disappointed with the product - it was bulky (though this was known before I bought it), poorly constructed, and was too harsh on my floors and rugs - the harsh beater brush frayed one of my rugs after 2 uses, a design flaw in my opinion. I had never heard of Miele before seeing the name mentioned a few times while researching the Dyson. Also, a friend had the S4212 Neptune and recommended it. So I went with the Miele (ordered via Amazon) to replace the disappointing Dyson.

To give a quick background - I have a 2000 sq ft single story house, with mostly wood floors and rugs and some tile (kitchen and bathrooms), and I have a dog that sheds profusely. While I did not realize it at the time, it turns out the Miele-style canister vacuum is much better suited to a situation like mine, with hard floors and rugs (as opposed to wall to wall carpeting, which I don't have anywhere in my home).

The Miele is an excellent product. I find that it has strong suction power, but the ability to turn the power down for small area rugs, drapes, and furniture is a huge advantage. It's extremely lightweight and maneuverable, and I can get into tight spaces and under furniture that would be a big problem for an upright (and would require transitioning to the wand, which is a pain). The included parquet attachment does a great job on my hard flooring, and I don't have to worry about it scratching my wood floors. The turbo brush is powerful enough to pick up the dog hair from my rugs, yet not so strong as to damage them. The build quality is solid, the included attachments are useful, and (unlike the Dyson) the Miele includes very useful and easy to follow instructions.


Pros:

~ Retractable power cord (much more convenient than having to fumble with the cord on an upright. Some complain the Miele power cord is too short, I find the ability to retract it is a worthwhile tradeoff)

~ Relatively quiet

~ Extremely maneuverable - follows me with no problem, parquet brush gets in corders and under furniture with ease

~ Excellent build quality, construction materials, and fit & finish

~ Excellent included tools - Parquet attachment for hard floors, turbobrush for rugs, and a dusting, furniture, and crevice attachment

~ Excellent aftermarket support - company has been around for a long time, shouldn't be hard to get parts if anything breaks, attachments, bags, filters etc.


Cons:

~ The biggest con is, IMO, Miele has too broad and confusing of a product line. The S4 line does not allow for the use of a powered attachment (like the powerbrush), while the cheaper S2 does (the S2 also accepts bigger bags - why doesn't the S4?). Some of the S5 models are extremely expensive, and I can't quite figure out exactly what makes them worth the premium vs. the S4. I think Miele could simplify the product line, or at least make it easier to compare the pros/cons of one vs. the other

~ No ability to accept a powered attachment. Because the S4 cannot accept powered tools (like the powerbrush), it's probably not the best choice if you have wall to wall carpeting. In that case, I'd look at the Miele S2180 Titan Canister Vacuum - Chili Red, which includes the powerbrush. The lower tiered S2 lines don't include a power-brush, but unlike the S4 they are compatible with the power brush if you decide to purchase one in the future.


Overall, it's a 5 star product. The product line is a bit confusing, with some Miele's better for hard wood floors and others better for carpeting. If, like me, you have mostly hard floors with some area rugs (including large area rugs), the Neptune is an excellent choice. Having struggled with vile super-heavy, badly-designed, dust-regurgitating Kenmore vacuum cleaners, esp. their upright model, I finally decided to spend money I haven't got and get a really good vacuum cleaner that will attack the dust problem in my old house and protect my baby's breathing.

So the Miele libra has entered my life as of today and it's ...well a revelation. I no longer have to get my husband to help me get the machine out of the closet, and cleaning the hallway carpet with it was like gliding on air...so easy and effortless. It fits nimbly under furniture, including old dressers and sideboards (that's a big reason why I wanted this power brush, not just that it's cheaper than the other two) which is so important for me; and is both light and powerful. And quiet. About choosing a power brush: I have just one thickish (old, and i'd like to get rid of it) carpet, and I find that this power brush does require some muscle work to move over it, but it is OK and sure picks up the stuff. It just doesn't glide as effortlessly as over the other carpets. But I am glad I didn't spend another 50 bucks getting a model with a power brush that might have handled just that one carpet easier because it just wdn't have made sense. I also have some wood flooring, for which the nimble parquet swivel brush works very well.

Now I don't have to go through the immense hassle of moving baby's crib every time I want to vacuum under it! I don't have to mess around with crappy little attachment brushes with no power just to tackle spaces narrower than a freeway. May Kenmore rot in a ditch!! Finally I will be able to clean my large, dust-prone home without misery and exhaustion! (Maybe i'll be able to breathe again too....)

Lowest Price Canister Floor Vacuum

Since I've only used this a couple times, I'll update this review if it turns out to be too optimistic. As expected, the vacuum cleaner is very lightweight and compact. It has two settings: high and low. For my purposes, the low setting is perfect; since I have wood floors and scatter rugs, the high setting is unnecessary and tends to grab up the rugs. I think the high setting would be sufficient for carpets though. Best of all, the vacuum is surprisingly quiet - especially on the low setting (I had recently bought a Dirt Devil upright, cheap but 12 amp, which sounds like the proverbial jet engine revving up). One bag comes with the vacuum, and more can easily be ordered from Amazon. The one drawback so far, which keeps it from getting five stars, is that the wand assembly tends to be easily pulled apart. There are no tabs to connect the two metal wands together or to connect the metal wands to the hose connection; all three are just fitted together, and going back and forth over rugs often requires holding the wands together to keep them from pulling apart - I'm reluctant to tape them together since that would limit the vacuum's versatility. The cord is reasonably long, considering how compact the vacuum is; but the retraction mechanism requires working with to get the cord completely retracted. All in all though, a great product for the price.
UPDATE: After having used this product for three months, I still consider it an excellent product. The only thing I would add is that the one thing I disliked about it - the flimsy wand assembly that keeps pulling apart - is really starting to get on my nerves; and I'll undoubtedly have to end up taping the pieces of the wand together. This is a great vacuum. I thought long and hard about spending $1,000 on a vacuum. It was NOT an easy decision.
5 Stars for the vacuum itself but looses a star due to the attachments.

PROS:
The vacuum itself is great. Powerful suction, low noise (much lower than any other vacuum I've ever heard) which makes it less annoying to vacuum, the auto-power feature works well (remember, it's the amount of air flow that counts, unless your trying to pick up a bowling ball) and it's less strain on the motor, I definitely noticed the REAL HEPA filtering on this vacuum, no smell an no dust blowing around.

CONS:
The ergonomic handle is OK when using the floor attachments but makes dusting shelves and other items difficult when using the attachments. It is also bulking making it difficult to get under and around items. Their solution is to purchase the car cleaning kit or the micro kit at $150 - 175. For $1,000 it should have the option to remove the ergonomic handle. This would have been helpful.

Overall I'm happy with the purchase because I have bad dust allergies and no other vacuum has had real HEPA filtering. I decided my health was worth the expense.

I bought this unit to replace a dying 7.6v cordless vacuum that was at the end of its lifespan. I have four kids and was pretty excited about a new, better, more powerful hand vac. I received the Shark and, following advice I've seen on here, made sure to completely discharge the battery and then fully charge it for over 24 hours before first using it. I was extremely disappointed in the performance. It also seemed scuffed and used already. I then noticed the box said Refurbished on it and thought, I don't remember ordering a refurbished hand vac? In fact, [...] had the same unit for the same price, NEW, but I decided to go with Amazon for no real reason. I then checked the product's page on Amazon and it is extremely unclear when ordering it that it is refurbished. In fact, if you don't see the tiny print that says, "1 refurbished at $[...]", you would never know that you were not getting a new item. It doesn't say refurbished in the product description, nor when it's in your shopping cart, so if you just click Add To Cart, you would probably never see it.

I'd like to send this unit back, but I assume it was my fault for not catching the "refurbished" tiny text on the product page. Just wanted to enter a quick review for anyone who is on the fence about purchasing this vacuum. I live in an apartment in NYC and I wanted a small vac to clean my rugs and the carpet in our hallway- that I could stow away without too much trouble. I have kids so there is all manner of dirt and debris and small toys, etc to clean.

I bought this vac about 4 months ago and so far it has greatly exceeded my expectations. This is our 4th vacuum, we had uprights and canisters from the Shark to Hoover to RedDevil and this is by far the best of the lot. The suction from the 11amp motor is very strong and it can pickup even small irritating things that my other vacuums would leave (thin objects like toothpicks, cellophane, tiny beads). The cord retractor is awesome and the casing is pretty tough because I've dropped it a few times and there is no sign of damage.

The only bad things are that the wheels are superfluous because it has a tendency to sit on its back, and it requires a bag. I haven't had any trouble finding bags- even my local hardware store has them- but it would be better if I didn't have to deal with them at all.

I have been a Dyson user for years. I have the Hepa filters, the top of the line Dyson for pets. I have 2 cats, 1 wife and a daughter who all shed. I'm sick of hair stuck to me, the furniture, my clothes, my shoes....arrrgghhh!

Research and lots more research kept me coming back to Miele. Then I found out you have to go to a store because the prices are fixed, so what's the point of buying online? Go to your local brick and mortar and you can at least get service close to home.

I talked to my local guy and he sold me the Miele, but he couldn't adjust the price. But what he did do was throw in 3 brushes/attachments of my choice, extra bags, free yearly tune-ups/check-ups, and a lifetime warranty on the Meile Capricorn.

I pulled the trigger and made the purchase.....now all I can say is "wow".

Within a week, I had to replace the bag because it was full of hair! (gross)

That was all the hair that the Dyson had left behind, hidden in the carpet and floors and probably the furniture too. My clothes no longer have hair floating off of them and I must say the carpet and furniture look much cleaner than before I bought the Miele. This vacuum is picking up the dirt that the Dyson had left behind.

The operation of this Miele is simple and easy to use. It is not heavy, but it is substantial and solid. Very quiet, and I use it to clean out my car too. Works so well everywhere throughout the household. Quality personified.

Pros: I own it. Easy to use, very quiet.

Cons: The price will stop you for a second...but you get what you pay for and I think I got MORE than I paid for here. I consider myself a smart consumer and research all major purchases thoroughly. Buying a vacuum was a big deal for me as the last few I purchased, I hated. I had the highly rated Eureka Boss upright and Kenmore Progressive cannister. The Eureka was a bear to use due to it's weight and size. The Kenmore power head was cumbersome, wide and very heavy. And I have pretty much liked every single thing about it until last week. Let me start by saying I did not buy this vacuum here, I bought it at Walmart. My last upright vacuum broke and I was adamant about getting a canister vacuum due to hardwood and carpeted floors, light weight, and easier carrying up stairs. (The uprights are so damn heavy and my parents loved their Bissell canister vac from the 90's) I didnt really have any issues with this vacuum over the past year and a half. We have dogs and cats, no issues with sucking power or clogs. We have hardwood, carpet, tile, and stairs...no issues with ANY of those surfaces. With this vacuum I practically threw my brooms away. HOWEVER...last week my Bissell broke. I knew it was going to happen, I could tell. Certain pieces on this vacuum are FLIMSY AND PLASTIC when they should be metal, etc. The vacuum broke where the "Pole" meets the "Foot" (foot meaning the flat part where the brushes are). I wasnt vacuuming under anything, or around anything. It wasnt "knocked" or "hit" I was just vacuuming low carpet and the plastic literally snapped. It snapped below where the pole connects to the foot so the cable that connects them is still in tact but the pole and the foot have sharred plastic around them and no tape or glue will put it back together. Called Bissell and was told I needed to replace the Pole for $43.99 and the foot for $64.99, since both pieces obviously snapped apart, totaling $108.98. I just dont know that it's worth it. I wasnt blown away by this vacuum, although I had no real issues with it, my old upright did clean a little better. I will take my $108.98 and go buy a crap vacuum from Walmart...since they all seem to be disposable these days anyway. The bags are high quality with 9 layers and instantly seal when you have to change the bags to provent anything from escaping. The Vacuum is very light and easy to use. The handle is very comfortable and adjustable so your back does not ache. I like that I control all the settings with my foot and I do not have to bend over and the canister is insulated so it reduces the noise while vacuuming. Bought my Miele Capri from seller "Mr.Vac & Mrs.Sew". It came on time and brand new as stated. The Capri model is the same as the Olympus, except it also comes with the air powered brush head.

Pros
1. The vacuum itself is fairly light weight (not counting the hose and head), weighing in at 10.25 lbs, even my 75 yr old mother can carry it fairly easily. Seems well made and durable. 1200 watts provides pretty good suction, maybe an extra 200 watts would be better, but still good enough as is.
2. Motor is pretty quiet, even at highest speed, most of the noise is coming from the suction.
3. Can install an optional HEPA filter.
4. Bag looks quit large and should hold a good amount of dirt.
5. Bought the Capri model, it is essentially the same as the Olympus, except that it comes with the air powered turbo spinning brush head instead and a bare floor head with brush (not spinning). The spinning brush head is definitely a must have, if you have carpet and want it to pick up long hair and dirt that is slightly buried into the carpet, it also does help fluff up the carpet. Even though the head is air powered, the brush spins quit fast and is very effective, unless you have very thick carpeting, then you may want to opt for their other models with an electric powered brush head.
6. Vacuum rolls easily, when pulled by the hose.
7. The metal wand, the piece that attaches in between the handle and the cleaning tool, is telescopic, so you can shorten it to half the length if needed.

Cons
1. Hose is 5 feet in length, which is a bit short, would have been nice to have an extra 2 feet.
2. Hose feels cheaply made, may have to be careful, incase if the hose is twisted, and it is pulled on hard enough, it may kink and damage the hose.
3. The handle tube is completely made of pretty durable thick plastic, but is quit curved and long, from where one would grip it, to the tip of the tube where you would attach a cleaning tool is about 12 inches. If you have a small cleaning attachment mounted, and need to get into a tight area, you may need to really hold it in an awkward angle to get in those tight spots, since your gripping hand will be approximately 12 inches away from the cleaning tool, so imagine that. This part should have been a lot shorter.
4. The clip that holds the three small cleaning attachments, can be clipped on to the base of the hose, by the vacuum or the other end of the hose by the handle. I do not like it at either end, would have been nice if they made it so that the three tools can either mount onto the back, or the top of the vacuum instead. Providing options would be nice.

Conclusion
Don't mind paying $399 for something that is intended to be used for many years, I think the price is a bit steep, but I guess you are paying for a German product. Again, the spinning brush head is a must for people with carpet. If you have carpet, save the extra $30, because you will end up buying the air powered turbo brush head later separately for $129. At this price, they could have used a better quality and slightly longer hose. Regarding the long handle, I guess I can learn to get use to it, but they REALLY should make it shorter. If it was not for the long handle and hose issue, this would have easily been a 5 star.

I have had this vac for a year now and I need to replace it. PROS: Great suction and telescoping wand. Cleaning head for rug and floor are pretty decent. I like the way the vac head could clip on to the vac which kept the hose upright and in place which is a plus while in closet. CONS: Big one: The metal wand constantly falls off. There is no way to make the metal telescoping wand stay attached to plastic hose. This is a problem for all Hoover small cannister vacs. 2nd Con: Today the retractable cord retracted but must have gone off its track inside vacuum and now I can't get the cord to unwind. I have looked the whole casing over and there is not a screw in sight that would let you gain access to fix the cord. 3rd and my fault, used the vac to clean car and must have stepped on metal wand and dented it. I can not get the metal wand to extend now. It's jammed good. My fault and was going to call Hoover to get new wand, but now the cord is jammed also. The nearest authorized Hoover repair place is too far away for me. 4th con: the only extra attachment is a crevice tool with a removable brush head. There is no upholstery brush which I dearly miss. Last con: Although wheels in the rear of vac are large and sturdy, there is one small wheel in front and the vac tips over constantly. I've had this vacuum for a couple of years now. I have three dogs and a cat,so lots of fur to pick up. When this vacuum was brand new, it was the best vacuum I ever had, by far. Tore through the fur like it wasn't even there, effortlessly. But as it aged(very quickly), less and less worked on it. First of all, that slogan, "never loses suction" is an outright lie. It'll lose suction all the time, for many reasons. The main reason is that when the debris you vacuum up enters the canister, it has to make a 150 degree turn, which inevitably leads to clogs. Another reason it loses suction is because the filters clog up. Apparently it's not intended to suck up dust. Sometimes, though, it just loses suction for no reason at all. "Never" loses suction? I think they mistook "never" for "always."
Right now, the powerhead doesn't work at all. It just makes a horrific loud whining noise and nothing else.
Other complaints I have are: the way the attachments clip onto the body of the machine is cheap and pretty useless. Once you've taken the attachments on and off a couple of times they just fall off all the time and can't be clipped back into place reliably. You'll either have to store them elsewhere, or pick them up a hundred times every time you vacuum. Also, the hose attaches to the side of the body, making the machine asymmetrical. Think that doesn't matter? Try pulling this machine around the house - it tips over constantly, and gets caught on every piece of furniture or doorframe it can find, since it can't be pulled straight.
Dyson customer service is nonexistent. They couldn't care less about the problems. I have 4 years of "warranty" left, but like most companies these days, having a warranty means nothing's wrong and they can ignore you completely.
