I have looked over the reviews here, especially the one star reviews. All I can conclude is that these people do not know how to use a vacuum. Here is my review. I am a clean person, at least I thought I was until I bought this Bissell. I had been using a reconditioned vacuum my parents bought me 10 years ago and had not realized how poor a job it was doing. After using this vacuum for the first time, my house literally SMELLED different. The matted down pile on my normal carpet and my shag rugs were restored to new. They were both soft and fluffy to walk on again. It smelled like it does right after I have the carpets cleaned. This vacuum is POWERFUL. From what I gathered it seems to get everything out of the carpet. Stuff I didn't even know was there. This vacuum is also heavy, which while not a big deal for me, may be for some. I can still easily carry it up stairs. I am very happy with this vacuum!
Now for the cons, nothing is perfect and this is no exception. Yes the canister is small, and yes if you fill past the fill line it will dump all over the carpet. The first time I used it I had to empty the canister six or seven times. After that I had to empty it once or twice. Bissell can improve on this feature. Second, even with the extension, the hose is pretty short. A second extension arm would work wonders here. As for the oft disputed "pet hair easer", this is definitely a gimmicky device. It isn't necessary but I did find it useful on the stairs.
